The Mamirauá Institute, or Instituto de Desenvolvimento Sustentável Mamirauá, is a Brazilian social organization established in 1999. It focuses on research and conservation efforts in the Amazon region, particularly in the threatened flooded forests known as várzeas. The Institute aims to conserve biodiversity and promote sustainable use of natural resources while improving the quality of life for local populations. The Mamirauá Institute manages two significant protected areas in Amazonas state: the Mamirauá Sustainable Development Reserve and the Amanã Sustainable Development Reserve, covering approximately 3,474,000 hectares. It conducts applied ecological and social research, develops sustainable management practices, and engages local communities in participatory management. The Institute also runs conservation programs for endangered species and promotes alternative economic activities that align with biodiversity conservation. By integrating scientific research with social development, the Mamirauá Institute serves as a model for sustainable development reserves in Brazil, influencing national conservation policies and practices. It collaborates with various stakeholders, including government bodies, local communities, and international donors, to achieve its mission.
