The General Directorate for Environmental Protection (GDOS) is Poland's central authority for environmental protection and nature conservation. Established in 2008, it operates under the Minister of Environment and is based in Warsaw. GDOS is responsible for conducting environmental impact assessments, managing the Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS), and overseeing the Natura 2000 network, which protects approximately 19.8% of Poland's territory. GDOS ensures compliance with EU environmental regulations and supervises 16 regional directorates that enforce policies at the provincial level. The organization also promotes public participation in environmental decision-making and facilitates knowledge exchange through the European Network of Environmental Authorities (ENEA). GDOS publishes environmental data and policy documents to support stakeholders, including government agencies, businesses, and NGOs involved in conservation efforts.
