The International Fund for Public Interest Media (IFPIM) is a multilateral initiative established in 2021 to support independent public interest media worldwide. It addresses financial challenges faced by media organizations, especially in low- and middle-income countries, where traditional business models are struggling. The fund aims to increase funding for ethical journalism and enhance the economic resilience of independent media. IFPIM is co-chaired by Maria Ressa and Mark Thompson, with Nishant Lalwani serving as CEO. Headquartered in Paris, France, the fund has received financial backing from 17 governments and organizations, including a significant pledge from the U.S. government. It provides grants to media organizations and conducts research to develop insights into the challenges and sustainability of public interest media. The fund is working towards raising $150 million by mid-2025 to further support independent media initiatives.
