Established under the Consumer Council Ordinance (Cap. 216), the Consumer Council is committed to enhancing consumer welfare and empowering consumers to protect themselves, by acting as advocate for consumer interests, facilitating constructive discussion and promulgation of pro-consumer policies, and empowering consumers to help themselves. This is to be achieved through initiatives directed at the consumers; the private sector; and networking with other stakeholders, such as the media and government. Consumers include consumers of goods and services and purchasers, mortgagors and lessees of immovable property. Our main duties include (i) forestalling and mediating consumer disputes; (ii) ensuring product quality and safety; (iii) collecting market information on services and goods; (iv) promoting sustainable consumption; (v) advocating best practice and competition in the marketplace; (vi) disseminating consumer information; (vii) empowering consumers through education; (viii) representing the consumer voice and networking, and (ix) improving legal protection for consumers.
