Literature for Life is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting literacy and critical thinking through performance-based adaptations of American literary classics. Founded over 30 years ago, it evolved from the educational program of the American Place Theatre into an independent 501(c)(3) organization. Under the leadership of co-founding Artistic Director Elise Thoron, the organization has expanded its reach nationally, performing in schools, libraries, theaters, prisons, shelters, and community centers, particularly in underserved neighborhoods. The organization offers performance-based literacy programs that adapt literary classics into solo performances, where a single actor portrays multiple characters. These performances are complemented by facilitated discussions to enhance understanding and inspire critical consciousness. Literature for Life also provides tailored workshops that connect literature to personal experiences, fostering empathy and social awareness. Their repertoire includes adaptations of works like *Black Boy* and *The Great Gatsby*, catering to a diverse audience, including students, educators, and community groups.
