Law Enforcement
The Office of the Director of Corporate Enforcement (ODCE) was Ireland's statutory body dedicated to promoting compliance with company law and enforcing corporate governance standards. Its mission focused on improving the compliance environment for corporate activities in Ireland. The ODCE investigated breaches of the Companies Acts and took enforcement actions against violations, operating with a team of professionals including accountants, lawyers, and detectives. The ODCE's functions included encouraging compliance through public communication, investigating suspected breaches, and enforcing compliance through legal actions. It collaborated with other agencies to gather evidence and typically engaged with companies following complaints or routine checks. Established in November 2001, the ODCE aimed to enhance public compliance standards and reduce business risks. In 2022, it was succeeded by the Corporate Enforcement Authority (CEA), which continues its functions with greater autonomy and resources to combat corporate and regulatory crime more effectively.
