Legislative Office
The Legislative Assembly of British Columbia is the province's elected legislative body, consisting of 93 Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) who represent various constituencies. Operating within a Westminster-style parliamentary system, the Assembly is responsible for debating and passing laws, representing citizens' interests, and holding the government accountable. It has been in existence since British Columbia joined Canada in 1871 and includes members from government, opposition parties, and independents. MLAs engage in legislative debates, serve on committees, and may hold ministerial roles. The Assembly ensures responsible governance by requiring the Cabinet to maintain the confidence of the majority of MLAs. It also provides a platform for political discourse, policy development, and oversight of government actions. The Assembly is supported by over 400 non-partisan staff and follows a strategic plan to guide its operations and priorities. Its outputs include legislation, policy debates, committee reports, and educational resources about the legislative process. The primary stakeholders are the citizens of British Columbia, along with political parties and government ministries.
