The Council of Graduate Schools (CGS) is a global membership organization that promotes graduate education and research. Established over 40 years ago, CGS represents institutions in the U.S., Canada, and beyond. It focuses on policy advocacy, research, and the development of best practices to enhance graduate programs. As a nonprofit, member-driven organization based in Washington, D.C., CGS advocates for graduate education by engaging with federal policies and conducting data-driven research. Its services include representing member interests in policy discussions, conducting research initiatives like the PhD Career Pathways program, and developing frameworks for program innovation. CGS also administers grants to support STEM workforce development and hosts networking events, including conferences and workshops. CGS serves over 500 member institutions, including universities offering graduate degrees, as well as policymakers and foundations. It publishes reports and toolkits to share insights and resources that help institutions implement effective practices in graduate education.
