The Council of the Baltic Sea States (CBSS) is an intergovernmental political organization that promotes cooperation among countries in the Baltic Sea Region. Established in 1992 in Copenhagen, the CBSS serves as a platform for regional collaboration, focusing on aligning global goals with local policies and actions. The organization comprises 11 member countries, including Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, Russia, and Sweden, along with the European Commission. It is governed by a Council and a Committee of Senior Officials, supported by a Secretariat based in Stockholm. The CBSS engages in policy development through high-level meetings and sectoral conferences, facilitating cooperation in areas such as environmental protection, economic development, and social issues. The CBSS initiates strategic projects and generates policy reports that guide regional decision-making. It also fosters international cooperation frameworks among its member states and observer countries, enhancing collaboration with organizations like the UN and EU.
