Government Relations
The International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) is an intergovernmental organization focused on surveying and charting the world's seas, oceans, and navigable waters. Established in 1921 and headquartered in Monaco, the IHO has 101 member states, each represented by their national Hydrographer or equivalent authority. The organization is led by a Secretary-General and two Directors, elected by member states during the IHO Assembly. The IHO sets international standards for hydrographic data and provides capacity-building programs to enhance the capabilities of its member states. It offers guidance on hydrographic matters and coordinates activities among member states. Additionally, the IHO is involved in the creation and maintenance of nautical charts, which are vital for safe navigation and marine environmental protection. The organization also holds observer status at the United Nations, recognized as the competent authority in hydrographic surveying and nautical charting.
